Music

Here is some of  the music you’ll hear us playing. The links below will bring up a printable sheet of music with (usually) both dulcimer tablature and standard musical notation, and sometimes even some guitar chords. For some songs, both melody and harmony parts are available. Bring a copy with you to the jam sessions so you can join in the fun.

In a few places, we have combined a few tunes into a medley. We also rely on the generosity of some great dulcimer players and teachers out there that post music on their websites. We make every effort to credit the proper sources and to only post tunes in the public domain or for which we have been given permission, or have made our own arrangements. Kudos to Chad and Ray for tabbing some of these out.

IF you are new to reading Tablature (tab) this is a nice explanation. Check our Beginner's Page for more tips if you are just getting started.

The Loose Pages
- we recommend printing these, putting into sheet protectors, and making an alphabetically arranged 3-ring binder.

Sing we now our Morning Song/Sun is High (page is excerpted from Follow Me Merrily with kind permission of Maddie MacNeil and Janita Baker)

BOOKS THAT WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND (AND PLAY FROM)
These books are all friendly toward our non-dulcimer playing members and include standard musical notation (dots!) and chords. We’ve given one link to the author’s site on each book, but these books are available in many places (including used book stores and ebay).

Flat Picked fiddle Tunes

Flat-picked Fiddle Tunes for Mountain Dulcimer
This tunebook is our find of the year! It is only $10 and filled with classics in wonderful arrangements.

Mark's Book

Mel Bay's Complete Book of Celtic Music for Appalachian Dulcimer by Mark Nelson. Here are some of the tunes we like:

  • Haste to the Wedding
  • Smash the Windows
  • Off She Goes
  • Harvest Home
  • Jackie Donnan’s Mazurka
  • Si Beg Si Mor
  • Skye Boat Song
  • The Rose Tree #2
  • Farewell to Whiskey
  • Mairi Mhin Meall-Shuileach (can’t pronounce it, but it is beautiful)

Handy tip for this book and others with the same style binding. For a nominal fee, Kinkos will cut off the glued edge and replace it with a spiral binding that lays flat and behaves much better on a music stand.

Celtic Songs and Slow Airs

Celtic Songs & Slow Airs for Mountain Dulcimer by Neal Hellman. Here is our working list:

  • Ye Banks and Braes
  • Star of the County Down
